The Qt Company Deepens Strategic Partnership with LG Electronics

Espoo, Finland – Jan. 9, 2020 – The Qt Company today signed an agreement with LG Electronics (LG) to enter a strategic partnership. This agreement entails collaboration in developing technological and business opportunities in the embedded space, including areas like automotive, robotics, smart homes, and more.

The strategic partnership between LG Electronics and The Qt Company represents a joint effort to introduce webOS to more customers and bring it to more devices. Through the partnership, The Qt Company will perform continuous integration (CI), which guarantees that webOS will always be compatible with the latest Qt versions.

At the core of the collaboration between LG Electronics and The Qt Company lies webOS. LG Electronics developed webOS using The Qt Company's development platform, Qt, to create the definitive operating system (OS) for smart devices. LG intends to make webOS a common platform for multiple different devices and services not only for LG itself but also for other OEMs and developers all over the world.

”LG has a long history of using Qt as a UI development platform in LG products with webOS. We are extremely delighted to advance our collaboration to make Qt and webOS available to as many customers as possible,” says Juha Varelius, CEO of The Qt Company.

Through this partnership, Qt users gain access to webOS’ mature middleware stack for USB, WIFI, Bluetooth, multimedia, software over-the-air updates, and more. webOS also comes with hundreds of content services best known from LG Smart TVs, which lets companies create more immersive, connected experiences. This provides numerous opportunities in the automotive industry, and in other products where data ownership is essential. Since webOS uses the same programming languages as Qt (i.e., QML, HTML5, and C++), developers can also more easily adopt webOS and reduce time to market.

“webOS interacts with a lot of global partners, from silicon vendors to cloud services. Qt is one of our important partners with thousands of customers across dozens of industries,” said Dr. I.P. Park, president and CTO of LG Electronics. “I am happy to announce that we are expanding the partnership to a global business collaboration, leveraging each party’s strength.”
