Neocis is the first-ever dental robotics company committed to enhancing dental surgeons’ capabilities as well as advancing patient care. Neocis’ robots are predominantly used for implant surgeries: these come into play when someone has lost a tooth or several teeth, and is looking to get them replaced with a crown or bridge.
Their technology has two main components:
When a patient comes in, they are given a pre-operative CT scan, from which a 3D reconstruction of their teeth and mouth is also created. After this, the surgeon will plan and map out the surgery virtually in its entirety, so that everything is clear from start to finish.

Neocis’ first system was a Microsoft Foundations Class (MFC) application. Neocis wanted to modernize their software and user interface, and to give it a facelift.
Switching to Qt enabled this jump to modernity, and allowed Neocis to achieve all of their UI hopes and dreams, replacing their old MFC system in its entirety.
For Neocis, it was important for their new system to be cross-functional and to allow being run on different operating systems and platforms: surgeries can be planned directly on the robots, but most surgeons prefer doing this on their desktop computers for ease of use. The company wanted a solution that could provide a functional user experience for both Windows and Mac users, and found just that in Qt.
Watch the above video to hear Jim Tieman, Director of Software Engineering at Neocis, explain the difference switching to Qt has made for their company.

The company is looking into diversifying the surgical capabilities of their robots so that these could be used more extensively. The robots are particularly useful when a surgery requires challenging technical precision, such as a full-jaw denture surgery. Being able to utilize the robots further would allow for a variety of conditions to be treated with more ease.
Another aspect Neocis wants to focus on is the overall patient experience. It is often easy to look at medical devices simply from the physicians or engineer’s perspective, however, the company also wants to increase their level of patient care by providing their patients with insights, visuals, and other helpful information throughout the process. To them, implants are not just implants, but teeth, and can make a huge difference to a person’s wellbeing. Supporting more and more areas of the patient experience is hence at the very core of Neocis’ values and development – and Qt will be there to help take the project to the next level.
Neocis, the first dental robotics company, is committed to enhancing dental surgeons’ capabilities and advancing patient care. Neocis is empowering dental professionals to be the most advanced in their field by bringing disruptive technologies to dentistry.
