Enabling the Touch-Control User Interface for Lytro’s New Light Field Cameras.

Watch video

Lytro chooses Qt to rapidly create the user interface for their two latest cameras models. The cameras’ controls are integrated into standalone touchscreen tablets that not only allow users to set up a shot but also make image adjustments - before post-production.

"Qt’s cross-platform application framework provides great flexibility. It gives us the ability to rapidly integrate touch-enabled controls and features, which means we can take the user experience of our camera systems to a whole new level."

Tim Milliron, VP, Lytro

Challenging Known Limitations

From pyrotechnics to animation and computer-generated graphics, the film and TV industry has a long history of creating groundbreaking visual effects. But this has often been a time-consuming process that has slowed down creative direction.

The Lytro Cinema and Lytro Immerge cameras use light-field technology to open up a whole new world of visual options for film, TV, and virtual reality applications. Unlike regular cameras, which just record light intensity, Lytro’s cameras capture the color, direction, and placement of light in every pixel. This allows the camera to be virtualized, meaning focus, perspective, aperture, and shutter angle can be changed in post-production.

Project challenges

  • Two different teams were working on the Lytro Cinema and Lytro Immerge cameras. Though based on the same underlying technology, the cameras have different use cases and user-interface requirements.
  • Lytro wanted a cross-platform framework to rapidly create the UI while incorporating the features required to ensure a great user experience.

The Solution

  • Qt provided the cross-platform UI framework tool including the easy-to-use QML declarative programming language and was there with strong community support for development.
  • Camera controls are integrated into standalone touchscreen tablets with a responsive UI that allows users to operate the camera and adjust images on the fly.

Lytro

Lytro was founded in 2006 by Executive Chairman Ren Ng, whose Ph.D. research on Light Field imaging won Stanford University’s prize for best thesis in computer science. In late 2015, Lytro announced the world's first Light Field solution for Virtual Reality (VR), Lytro Immerge, that was quickly followed by the 2016 launch of Lytro Cinema, the world's first Light Field capture system for cinematic content. With continued innovations and projects in the works, Lytro is firmly at the forefront of the generational shift from legacy 2D imaging to 3D volumetric video.
